It was formed eons ago during the ice age, and the movement of snow, ice and water on the granite and other rock of this area has created very fine, very beautiful sand over the years.

It’s the kind of sand that sparkles in the sun and feels great on your bare feet. Lake Tahoe is a very interesting place because it combines the culture of a mountain town and a beach community. Locals and frequent visitors think it’s the best of both worlds.

Meeks Bay is a lovely little resort where you can camp, stay in cabins, or book a room in the old fashioned lodge. It’s located on the West Shore of the lake in the community known as Tahoma.

There are concessions and a restaurant on site. It’s called the Wa She Shu Grille and it’s name is a word of the Washoe people, who were also responsible for naming Lake Tahoe. They were pretty accurate when they decided to call it “Big Water.”

The Meeks Bay area is like heaven on earth and offers nearby opportunities for biking, swimming, hiking, and boating.

It can get quite crowded in the summer but regardless is a wonderful place to stake out a spot in the sun.

The altitude makes the sun quite strong, though. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and maybe even a shade structure.
