Minnesota’s 67 state parks receive a lot of visitors each year. In fact, according to the DNR, the parks received nearly 8 million visitors in 2012. That’s a lot for a state with a population south of 6 million. But some of our beautiful state parks get overlooked. One of the most criminally overlooked? Bear Head Lake State Park.
Bear Head Lake State Park is located near Ely in northern Minnesota. But because of its location, it is often overshadowed by the nearby Boundary Waters.

But that is a mistake. While Bear Head Lake isn’t quite as large or untouched as the Boundary Waters, it is nonetheless truly beautiful.

Why is it so great? For one thing, the park contains more than 20 miles of lakeshore.

The expansive lakes are a great spot for fishing. You can explore by boat or cast your line from the Bear Head Lake fishing pier.

Several other lakes are accessible in the park as well. Cub Lake is quite secluded, but if you make the trek, you’ll be rewarded with peace and quiet - and fantastic fishing.

Speaking of treks, Bear Head Lake State Park contains 14 miles of hiking trails.

The trails lead through tall stands of spruce, pine, and birch trees.

Hidden throughout these rugged woods are many animals. Deer, bears, wolves, and many bird species make homes here.

The park has many campsites, as well as a guest house and camper cabins. The rustic cabins in particular make for a cozy stay - even in winter!
