Sure, there are plenty of hikes and outdoor things to do near Deer Isle. We know of one very popular attraction that sees tons of tourists each year. But, this hike isn’t there. In fact, it might be something completely new to a lot our readers. This area is one of our favorites simply because it’s…simple.
Barred Island Preserve is located on the west side of Deer Isle.

There are about 1.5 miles of trails in the preserve.

The trail you’ll want to travel is about a mile and will lead you through a gorgeous, lush forest.

And, ultimately, it will take you to the coast where you’ll find a sandy beach to explore.

There are all sorts of fun things for kids to comb through here.

But the best part is the hidden sand bar!

If you time your visit to coincide with low tide, you’ll be able to walk across the normally hidden path leading to uninhabited Barred Island.
JR P / Flickr There aren’t any maintained paths here, but you can scramble around the rocks for a little while. And you’ll have some beautiful views of Penobscot Bay and Goose Cove.
But! Be sure to time your trip back correctly or you might be stranded forever.

Once you’ve finished this main path, there’s another to explore.

The Shore Loop trail is a small loop that can be accessed from the main trail and will lead you to a boulder known as “Prayer Rock.”

The preserve parking area is located on Goose Cove Road in Deer Isle, which you can access from Route 15. Cross the causeway connecting Little Deer Isle and Deer Isle, then continue heading south. Eventually, you’ll get to Main Street where you’ll turn right. Main Street will become Bridge Street. Make a left at Sunset Road and drive about 3 miles. Make a right when you get to Goose Cove Road. Continue until you see the parking area will be on the left.
Note that if there aren’t any spaces to park, you’ll need to make other plans. So, do plan on arriving early.
