It was originally inhabited by the Native Americans of the Shasta, Klamath, Pit, Modoc and Wintu Native American tribes who utilized the abundant natural resources of the Mount Shasta area.

Later, Europeans arrived around 1840 to hunt and trap animals for their fur. Today, the area relies primarily on tourism, but the communities located in these mountains are gems all on their own.
