Kirwin is an abandoned mining town located in the Absaroka Range. Not only has nature taken over the old town, but it has taken over the road to get there. To get to this abandoned town, you have to travel 35 miles on an unpaved rocky road that a stream crosses over.

Flickr/cogginsimages This area became significant in 1885 when two men were out hunting and found gold on Spar Mountain. Six years later, the area developed into a mining district and the Wood Mining District was established.

Flickr/Peter Kirwin thrived more from 1904 to 1907 than at any other time. There were 38 buildings and over 200 people in the area during those years. There was a hotel, boarding house, general store, sawmill and post office. There was even a stage coach that ran back and forth.

Flickr/David Cohen Things went downhill from there. There was a mine explosion in Bryan Mine that killed a miner and a massive avalanche on Brown Mountain in 1907 that claimed some lives and destroyed some buildings causing people to leave the town.

Flickr/Matt Lehrer In the 1940s, the Wolf Mine Shaft house was built. It is one of the more interesting buildings in the town of Kirwin.

Flickr/David Cohen Several attempts were made to revitalize the mining operations but they all failed.

A disaster put an end to this thriving town, but parts of it still remain. Have you been yet?
