Are you ready for winter? According to the just-released winter predictions from the 2017 Old Farmer’s Almanac, some Bay Staters are in for a “colder than normal” winter. Though the almanac’s secret formula for predicting weather up to 18 months in advance isn’t exactly scientific, the almanac claims its predictions are 80% accurate, according to its followers.
You’ll have to wait for the almanac’s release in late August to get the whole story, but a few hints about what’s in store for us this winter have been published online. You may or may not like them, depending on where you live.

The almanac splits Massachusetts into two regions diagonally, with the northwestern half receiving different predictions from the southeastern half.

The northeastern half, which includes Lawrence, Lowell, and Haverhill, received a grim prediction. You’re in for a cold and wet winter, with near-average snowfall, too.

The southeastern half includes Boston, Brockton, and Cambridge. This region is predicted to have above-normal winter temperatures, but also above-normal snowfall, especially from the middle of January through the middle of February (ugh).

What predictions for both regions have in common is lots of precipitation. We’re sure we’ll be shivering in January, but with the summer we’re having, winter is looking better and better.

Whether you believe the predictions or not, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is the longest running periodical in North America, and it contains lots of other useful and interesting information. You might want to pick one up, even if you don’t plan on doing any farming.
