Believe it or not, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor wasn’t the only disastrous event to take place at this historic military installation in the 1940s. Though certainly not as deadly or tragic as the notorious Japanese attack, the West Loch disaster was quite disastrous in its own right. Mankato is usually thought of as just another college town in Minnesota. But what many people don’t realize is that it has a dark past that dates back to the 1860s. On December 26th, 1862, Mankato was the site of the largest mass execution in US history.
