Far out in the desolate stretches of West Texas lies an anomaly that’s as fascinating as it is terrifying. In June of 1980, everything changed for the residents of the sleepy town of Wink when a 20-foot wide sinkhole formed seemingly out of nowhere. By the very next day, the abyss had grown to a diameter of over 350 feet. Luckily, the growth slowed drastically and eventually stopped…that is, until 20 years later, when a second hole emerged, this one expanding to over 750 feet wide and counting....

As you drive along Park Road in Burnet, Texas, you’ll no doubt see the Falkenstein Castle’s majestic towers peek out above the trees. When you think of a musical state, I’m positive Alaska doesn’t come to mind. We’re more of a scenic state with an intriguing past rather than one steeped in musical history. North Dakota has many deep valleys and painted canyons, but as far as mountain peaks go it’s a little lacking. There is another formation we do have, however, that can be equally impressive, and that’s the butte. They can form from seemingly out of no where, even among a landscape of gently rolling hills interrupted by the towering structure of a butte.
