Long before meteorologists could predict the weather’s every move, and a simple broadcast let us know of upcoming storms, a deadly, torrential flood struck western North Carolina. Ghost Town in the sky opened May 1st, 1961 to thousands of guests seeking their very own Wild Wild West Experience. The theme park featured 40 replica buildings and amusement rides. Guests rode the ski lift to a 4,600-foot elevation for an experience like none other. During its prime, Ghost Town had, on average, 620,000 visitors per year.
