Imagine Hawaii in the mid-1800s: the islands were united under the leadership of King Kamehameha III, Christian missionaries had recently arrived on the islands, the first coffee was planted in Kona – and sugar cane was king. Sugar cane production in Hawaii began at the Old Sugar Mill of Koloa, on the southern coast of Kauai, in 1835. This would mark the beginning of what would become the largest industry in Hawaii, though the plantation has long since been abandoned....

An Oregon highway was covered in a sea of slime and wriggling creatures on Thursday after an eel truck tipped over. Though the accident did not result in any injuries, Highway 101 was reduced to one lane as a thick, slimy goo spread across the road. Live eels were seen writhing and curling on top of cars and in ditches by the side of the highway. Some vehicles were completely engulfed by the slime, transforming the stretch of road into a scene from a horror movie....

Back in the early 1900s, all across the board, our knowledge of mental health issues and how to treat them was nowhere near what it is today. During a time where lobotomies and shock therapy were the only real forms treating of mental health, a world full of neglect and abuse existed at places like the Rockland Psychiatric Center. Built in 1927, this mental facility originally had 5,768 beds. While a steady decline of inpatients at the center occurred during the 1970s, just roughly 10 years prior Rockland was hitting peak numbers....

Iowa geography is stereotypically not very diverse. Rolling prairies were arguably its most unique quality, and those have been mostly eradicated. Once upon a time, in Jo Daviss County, mining was all the rage. In fact, it was a pretty common profession. There were significant lead and ore deposits in the area. Galena, in fact, is the name of a mineral. Those days, for the most part, are done. And certainly, the primitive mines we once used are no longer operational.
