The beach is a popular summer destination for Connecticut locals, but sometimes it’s nice to switch things up. So why not skip the crowded coastline and head to Pattaconk Lake instead? You’ll love the peaceful serenity of being surrounded by the forest, and the views ar nothing to scoff at either. Hike CT + has already paid this scenic gem a visit and the proof is in the mesmerizing photos. Switch up your summer routine and check out this underrated lake for some relaxing fun.

Pattaconk Lake, which also features a stream, is tucked inside the second largest forest in the state. It’s a great place for swimming and fishing, featuring cool waters and quiet surroundings. I can’t think of a better place to relax under blue skies than right here.

The lake has a sandy walk-in, much like the beach, which is why this little oasis should not be missed. Everything you love about the beach-splashing in the water, tanning and enjoying the outdoors is all right here. This is the place the Hartford Courant once described as “a painting come to life.” If you’ve ever gazed upon a watercolor and imagined what it would be like to actually be there, this is pretty close.

There’s also a 2.5 mile loop trail so feel free to explore the surrounding area and soak in the lush natural surroundings. Extend the trip a little longer by packing a picnic and enjoying it under the canopy of trees. You can also bring your pets, as long as you keep them on a leash. Enjoy this park with your friends and furballs as you relax in the shade, splash in the water and discover Connecticut’s wild side.
