We here at Only in Kansas love a good meal and—like we recently stated—great food is easy to come by here in the Sunflower State. Today’s featured restaurant, however, is about more than just great food. In fact, it is about great food, fascinating history and an ambiance unlike any other. Welcome to Assaria’s Renaissance Cafe:

Located just south of Salina, this charming Assaria cafe isn’t housed in a generic stand alone building; it is housed in the old 1919 Assaria High School Building.

When it comes to getting that “old school” feel, the Renaissance Cafe hits the nail on the head by displaying vintage textbooks…

Yelp

…intricate stained glass…

…and an awesome antique cash register.

Yelp

Did we mention that the lower half of the cafe is filled with old puzzles and board games just waiting to be played?

While all of this is fun and unique, the pièce de résistance of the Renaissance Cafe is that the restaurant seating surrounds the original 1919 sunken gymnasium.

Yelp Pretty cool, right?

The weekly specials are constantly changing, so make sure to check the cafe’s website. (Trust us; whatever dish you choose is guaranteed to be amazing!)

Renaissance Cafe Also keep in mind that the restaurant is only open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5-9 p.m.
