The name of this rock formation, Seals rock, comes from the former Steller’s sea lions and California sea lions, who would migrate and hang out on the rock. According to some, the seals started reappearing in January of 1990 after the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.

Dreamy and powerful. The coastal features found here today were formed by the long history of waves, wind, and sand movement. This part of the coast is similar to Oregon with the jutting rocks in the ocean.

If you’d rather get a view from the Cliff House, then grab a drink or meal and gaze at the beauty. Seal Rocks is often overlooked yet visible from not only the Cliff House, as well as Sutro Baths.
