New Jersey’s beaches can get a little (a lot) crowded in the summer, making it difficult to totally relax and enjoy some peace of mind. While they are wonderful, it’s very apparent that you’re far from seclusion. Still, if you know where to look, you can find a few hidden gems that will have you feeling like you’re a million miles away from it all. One of my favorites is the Northern Natural Area on Island Beach State Park.

Island Beach State Park

Flickr/Shinya Suzuki Island Beach is one of the last significant remnants of New Jersey’s barrier island ecosystem and one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier beaches on the north Atlantic coast. You’ll find over 3,000 acres and 10 miles of coastal dunes that have gone relatively untouched for hundreds of years.

Dunes

Flickr/Judith The park is comprised of several separate areas, including day use areas with swimming beaches. The Northern Natural Area does not allow swimming. In fact, this portion of the park is so well-protected, you can’t even sit on the sand.

Island Beach Red Fox

Flickr/Shared Experience In addition to the dunes, you’ll find wetlands and wildlife including osprey and the famous red fox. There are several trails and opportunities for fishing are available.

Right off Route 35 and just 3 miles from the hustle and bustle of Seaside Park, you’ll find yourself in a fairly secluded natural paradise perfect for photographers and short strolls.
