If you haven’t already heard, The Tutwiler has its very own ghost. As the story goes, Major Tutwiler was a former resident of the Ridgely Apartments. His ghost is well known for knocking on guestroom doors during the late night hours.

A few years ago, the ghost of Major Tutwiler was causing even more mischief. According to hotel lore, the lights and stove were constantly being left on after closing. The bartender was blamed for this. After happening five nights in a row, the manager called the bartender and told him to come to work immediately.

From then on, the hotel staff would tell the ghost of Major Tutwiler “Good night Major!” each night at closing. They would also ask him to kindly turn off the lights and stove, and to not make a mess.
There have also been reports of lights turning on and off by themselves, doors shutting and closing on their own, and faucets turning on and off. Very strange!
