There’s something forever exciting and adventurous about a swinging bridge. Maybe it’s that you feel like you’re reenacting your childhood dreams, sidestepping danger and crashing through jungle foliage a la Indiana Jones. It’s exciting no matter your age, and Tennessee has their own tucked up in East Tennessee – Foxfire Bridge.
Foxfire - Facebook As the longest swinging bridge in the United States (yeah, you read that right!), Foxfire brings in quite a few visitors every year. The privately owned bridge measures 400 feet across. That’s a bit of a way, you know.
Foxfire Mountain The Bridge of Prosperity, as it’s called, is located on Foxfire Mountain and the end culminates in a stunning view of Lost Mine Falls.
Foxfire - TripAdvisor At roughly four feet wide, the bridge stretches over Dunn’s Gorge. Swinging bridges were actually widely used in Appalachia, to gain access from one mountain to another. It sounds painfully obvious, but they were constructed and maintained out of necessity, using cable, wood and rock in most cases.
Foxfire Mtn Wordpress Foxfire recently had a contest on their Facebook page, asking folks to guess how many planks of wood make up the longest swinging bridge in the US (we love saying that. It’s so cool!). What do you think…?
GraytvInc If you guessed 204 boards, you’re right! Great work, guys. It is also made up of 134 cross ties. If you’re not scared to make the trek, it’s so worth it. Plus, you can tell the world about the neat experience you had deep in the mountains.
AdventureMomBlog There are quite a few options for admission since Foxfire has varying levels of adventure seeking folk. At just about an hour, we think crossing that Bridge of Prosperity should be at the top of your list. This is a true Tennessee gem.
