Michigan, and the Midwest in general, get kind of a bum rep from outsiders. It’s too cold. The economy’s depressed. It’s home to Detroit (a place that is known for its own problems). But there are tons of hidden secrets to be proud of here in in the Mitten. Here are 10 such little-known things maybe even you didn’t know about your beloved Michigan.

Jim/Flickr We’ve got this great highway, M-22, to take whenever we want to enjoy those sandy beaches or take in amazinig scenery. In fact, the roadway was named the most beautiful autumn scenic drives in America by USA Today.

We’ve got a neat-o way to remember the names of the Great Lakes: H.O. M. E. S.:Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.
