All aboard! It’s time to get on the historic 1880 Train in the Black Hills of South Dakota and experience the travel of the past. The original steam train will take you through the gorgeous, scenic landscapes in between stations. Along the way, you will not only be able to see the beautiful sights, but learn a lot, too.
To get the true experience, you need to take the trip yourself, but here’s a bit of a preview of the ride:
You can start in either Keystone or Hill City.
Eagle525/Tripadvisor To begin your journey, you can choose to start in one of two cities. If you take a round trip - the most popular option - you are given time to explore the destination city to see the sights before heading back.
At your starting point, you can buy a ticket and wait for the train to arrive before taking you off on a journey.
The trains and cars are original from the era they represent.
Cassandra F/Tripadvisor The cars you will be riding in are beautiful inside and out and are straight from the 1880s. The conductor and workers on the trains also wear clothing from the era to really immerse the travelers in the time.
As you go along, you’ll see the hidden areas of the Black Hills not many others see.

Secret meadows, babbling brooks among the trees, even old farms and plenty of wildlife are along the way.

And along the way, the ride is narrated to give you tons of knowledge about the time period, the train itself, and the area.

It’s a once in a lifetime experience, and one of the best ways to see the Black Hills.
1880 Train/Tripadvisor The journey is only a few hours round trip and allows you to see and explore an era since passed, and it’s well worth every minute.

The 1880 Town in South Dakota has a train car that has been transformed into a diner. It’s a must-visit, too. Their food is great, and the fact that you get to eat it in an old train car is even more awesome!
