South Dakota’s Black Hills National Forest is some of our prettiest country, and there’s no better time to explore it than during the mild summer months. Here’s an interesting way to see some spectacular scenery while relaxing.

Take a two-hour scenic train ride between Keystone and Hill City. You can board the train from either station.

The Black Hills Central Railroad consists of three steam engines and two diesel engines.

This is not an “express” train ride. The grade is steep, and some of the curves are quite sharp. The train moves very slowly to negotiate this tricky terrain - giving you plenty of time to really enjoy the beauty of this place.

It takes a lot of ongoing work and maintenance to keep the steam engines running. One of the engines is nearly 100 years old!

Water towers at each station refill the steam engines. The engines require between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons of water for every round trip.
