This winter has been surprisingly mild with temperatures flip-flopping from 55 degrees one day, to 30 degrees the next. While some Marylanders are glad that snow has stayed away, others long for the powdery white stuff. Whether you crave snow or not, sometimes we can’t help but reflect back on blizzards from long ago. One of the most epic snowstorms Maryland has ever seen was the infamous blizzard of 1996. See if you remember this outrageous snowstorm.
In January of 1996, a nor’easter tackled the east coast from northern New York, down to some of the southern states such as Kentucky.

With several inches of snow falling per hour, highways were shut down, people were left stranded, and some lost their power for weeks. Even the metro shut down due to an icy accident (pictured below).

Maryland areas received over two feet of snow, and some were even forced to shovel from their second story window.

If you were a child during this time, you may happily remember this infamous blizzard that shut down county schools for over a week. And if you were an adult, you more likely remember the annoyances.

People still talk about this snow event to this day, as it left a lasting effect on many. Hopefully, spring is right around the corner (contrary to what that pesky groundhog has to say about it).
