Virginia’s fall season is the most breathtaking vision of natural beauty you could hope to find. Brilliant reds, flaming oranges, and golden yellows begin to decorate the landscape, drawing us outside into the crips autumn air. But these trees are working on their own time, answering to different factors such as climate, elevation and temperature. Luckily for us, the Virginia Department of Forestry has issued a map outlining prime time for foliage viewing. Starting in just another short week, you can begin to see these beautiful changes.
Here’s the map, outlining dates and regions where the leaves will be at their peak colors:

October 10th - 20th: Blue Ridge Highlands and Virginia Mountains

October 15th - 25th: Central Virginia

This includes portions of Southern Virginia and bits of Northern Virginia as well. A drive through Charlottesville, Richmond, and Petersburg will yield an array of fall colors. October 20th - 31st: Coastal Virginia

Areas such as the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads will be especially prominent with color during these eleven days. The above photos are taken at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton and Oak Grove Park in Chesapeake, respectively.
