The town of Deadwood has a sordid history of violence and lawlessness. When Seth Bullock came into town in 1876, it was a deadly place where murder was an almost daily event. Bullock was eventually named Sheriff of the town, and he built the town’s first hotel. Though Seth Bullock is long dead, many say he never left his hotel…

Historic Bullock Hotel was built in 1895 by Seth Bullock and his business partner, Sol Star. The hotel is located at 633 Main Street.

Bullock was a legendary Sheriff who was fearless when it came to ridding Deadwood of its outlaws. He was also a proud, savvy business owner who took great pride in offering elegant, upscale lodging to visitors.

Sheriff Seth Bullock died of cancer on September 23, 1919. He was buried with his wife, Martha, on Mount Moriah.

The mantel in the hotel’s lobby holds a photo of Seth Bullock. Some say that Sherrif Bullock never left this place, and that he haunts it today.
