However, the area people come to see most can be found down these stairs…

These formations line the gulch itself, formed by Split Rock Creek. This small canyon once saw a feat performed by a notorious outlaw whose name is still known today.

605Kathy1/Tripadvisor This outlaw was none other than Jesse James. It is said that here, he was being pursued by a posse on horseback trying to catch him after a bank robbery in Minnesota. The gunshots echoed in the chasm and the pounding horse hooves came to a halt at the edge when the riders pulled up - except Jesse James’ horse, that somehow managed to leap across and allow him to get away.

This is even more impressive when you consider that the water below has been found to be virtually bottomless. This deep crack into the earth can be extremely dangerous with the current and depth. 600 feet of line has been lowered in this watery pit before, and no bottom was found.

The bridge you can see here allows you to stand where this amazing feat happened.

Sandie B/Tripadvisor It’s hard to believe a horse would be able to clear this canyon when you stand on the bridge. This legend has stuck with the people of Garreston all these years later, and probably always will. You yourself can go exactly where it happened, now known as the Devil’s Gulch, and see the beauty of the surrounding areas along with the legendary canyon.

The best part about this place is that it is free to visit, so you can go any time and enjoy the scenery and the history. The park is located at 5th Street and North Central Avenue in Garreston, SD.
