If you thought Connecticut didn’t have earthquakes, think again. This tiny town in Connecticut is putting that rumor to rest, and it’s pretty bizarre. So, if you love hauntings and folklore, you’ll definitely want to take a stroll over to Moodus and see if you can experience one of these earthquakes for yourself.
Moodus is a small village inside the town of East Haddam.
Jay McAnally/Flickr It still drips with New England charm, and is mostly quiet, except for the rumbling and crashing noises that come from the nearby woods. What residents describe as thunder and explosions is actually earthquakes!
The nearby Machimoodus State Park, however peaceful it may appear, is host to the cave where Native Americans claimed you could hear an angry god yelling.
Lisa Jacobs/Flickr The Native Americans believed Hobomocko to be a restless God, but when the quakes increased they believed the Puritans were the cause. So, they sold the land to them for a very cheap price and got out of there!
Finding the forest quite ominous and the sounds unsettling, they did the only thing they could. They prayed.

To the residents it’s a part of life, but to scientists it’s a bit of a phenomenon. Whether you believe the science or the folklore, the noises make this one of the weirdest towns around.
With the seismic activity increase, this town caught the attention of local news. Check out this short clip to hear residents describe what living with the noises is actually like!
I’m definitely adding the Moodus earthquakes to my bucket list! If you want more of the devil’s domain in Connecticut, you can check out the rest of East Haddam, the town he created.
