All across Kansas, we have quite a large expanse of areas that aren’t covered in buildings or farms that are just waiting to be explored. This State Park trail will transport you to another world that doesn’t seem very Kansas at all. This is a fantastic place to truly get away from it all, to where no one can find you (except other hikers, of course!).

Kanopolis State Park’s Horsethief Canyon Trail is #1 on my personal list of “Most Gorgeous Kansas Trails”.

It’s a fantastic 2.1-mile hike in any season, unless it’s storming. I don’t recommend you attempt this during rain.

The trail weaves in and out of rock formations that are anywhere from cream colored to a bright red.

Climbing these might be a little tough for some, but a good walking stick will help you get around the tougher bits.

This particular cave is pretty popular with hikers, but be careful, because the rock is worn from years of water flowing over it’s surface. This cave, and the rest of this orange-tinted trail definitely don’t seem like everyday Kansas to me!

Take a rest here, and just enjoy the view! It’s also a great picnic spot, but be sure to take everything back with you, so we don’t ruin the natural state of things!
