Kansas is a true haven for picturesque, one-of-a-kind, and (some) just plain quirky small towns, and we here at Only in Your State can’t get enough! Take, for instance, this unique and historic town that is truly anything but ordinary:
Located along the iconic Route 66, the small town of Galena is a former mining community that was established after the discovery of a lead spring in 1877.

Named for an ore galena in the area (after being known as Cornwall, Short Creek, and then Bonanza), Galena experienced great prosperity over the next century, until the area mines closed in the 1970s and the population drastically declined.

Over the years, Galena became a popular stopping point along the newly established Route 66; a 2,451-mile highway that stretches all the way from Illinois to California.

When you visit today, you will discover some of the same vintage charm that you would have found during Route 66’s heyday, which is a feat that business and homeowners alike have strived to maintain.

Now that we have gone over a (very) brief history of Galena, let’s take a closer look at the town…

After taking a closer look, does something about this quaint community seem vaguely familiar? It should, because…

…the town of Galena served as the inspiration for the fictional Radiator Springs in Disney/Pixar’s Cars!

Today the town is home to more than 3,000 residents, as well as multiple stores, restaurants, historic sites, and other surprises just waiting for you to be discovered.
