Oregon is full of stunning natural wonders. From forests to mountains, coastlines and deserts, the nature to be found here is incredibly diverse. Of all of Oregon’s spectacular destinations, the Painted Hills are one of the most spectacular.

The Painted Hills are located at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Wheeler County, and they are absolutely breathtaking. They’re known as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon, and for good reason. These colorful hills are millions of years old, layered with brightly colored soils and minerals woven delicately together over the millenniums. Not only are the Painted Hills full of fascinating natural history—but the otherworldly landscape is breathtakingly beautiful.

Because of their remote location, the Painted Hills are much less frequented than Oregon’s other natural landmarks such as Multnomah Falls, Crater Lake and Haystack Rock. This makes it a perfect destination for anyone who wants to see amazing natural beauty, but skip the crowds. Road trip, anyone?

The Painted Hills are a wonder to behold.
