Rock Castle Gorge Hike is a challenging excursion located in Floyd, Virginia along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The term “Rock Castle” refers to a rare and fascinating geological attraction in the area. Six-sided quartz crystals naturally occur here, and reminded early settlers of castles.

The trail is located in Rocky Knob Recreational Area and stretches nearly 11 miles in its entirety.

While the trek is strenuous, particularly during the initial climb, hikers are rewarded with a varied terrain, abundant wildlife, streams, and gorgeous overlooks along the way.

As you continue towards the gorge, you’ll pass a number of relics from centuries past, including a stone chimney from a former homestead and an old Appalachian Trail shelter.

During the final segment of the hike, the trail leads to gorgeous meadows elevated above the Parkway.
