The Normandale Japanese Garden in Bloomington is the perfect place to get some fresh air without running into too many crowds. Better yet, this secret garden is seriously beautiful.
You’ll find the Normandale Japanese Garden in an unexpected location. It’s on the grounds of Normandale Community College.

The park was completed in 1976 after years of planning. The garden replaced what was once a swampy area behind the college. It’s complete with paths, buildings, and a lovely lagoon.

Careful thought went into the design of the garden. Takao Watanabe, a Japanese garden architect, was instrumental in the planning.

From the shapes of the buildings to the lanterns in the garden, each item has a symbolic meaning.

For example, two of the lagoon’s islands, Crane Island and Turtle Island, symbolize longevity and good health respectively.

These days, the garden is often used for special events. Its beautiful greenery, eye-catching bridges, and unique buildings make it a fun spot for weddings.
