It’s no secret that Rhode Island is home to some pretty epically scary stories. From haunted farmhouses to the ghosts of famous writers, Rhode Island truly has it all in terms of the paranormal. Some places have such a dark past that they often go unreferenced to avoid bringing up past tragedies. Enough time has passed to discuss this tragic old tale of a murder in the 1800s that will definitely give you the creeps.

Burrillville is a small rural town in northern Rhode Island. Though it’s known mostly for its beautiful scenery, darkness haunts the town.

Legend has it that the woods near Maureen Circle are haunted by the ghosts of a young couple that was tragically murdered in 1806.

This legend, now known as the Swamp Bride, occurred when a young woman named Katherine Donahue became engaged to a man named Johnathon Cuttle.

This union sent Katherine’s neighbor and admirer David Jones into a spiral of rage and jealousy. Legend says that David sought out with a knife and pitchfork and sadly took the lives of both Katherine and Johnathon.
