Georgia has quite a few cemeteries throughout the state. Dare we say it’s part of what give this state some historical charm? While there are so many historical cemeteries worthy of checking out and paying your respects, the story behind this particular forgotten cemetery in Georgia is a bit chilling, but absolutely worth knowing. The Marietta Cemetery is said to have been enacted in order to preserve the history of fallen soldiers during the Civil War.

But while all the glory that this cemetery holds is honored daily, there is a small, forgotten cemetery which deserves recognition in its own right.

19 Christian slaves and freed people of Marietta Christians were buried here between 1848 and 1866 in what is otherwise known as Slave Lot.

The Slave Lot in the Marietta Cemetery is known as only slave burial ground in any major white Georgia cemetery.

Visiting Slave Lot is not as manicured as you would expect, especially compared to the rest of the cemetery.

The most chilling, or disturbing part about Slave Lot is that out of the 19 unmarked graves, only four are named and identified–the rest remain a mystery.

While it may not seem like much today, historically speaking it is a tremendous thing to have almost 20 slaves buried during and after the Civil War.
