There are a lot of things that make Oklahoma unique. From our topography to our quirky attractions to the shape of our state, there are some things you just can’t find anywhere else. One such place is Sidewalk Highway – an old portion of Route 66 in Ottawa County that is only 9 feet wide.

Sidewalk Highway was completed in 1922 and, at 9 feet wide, it’s only a little wider than your average sidewalk.

Oklahoma was a new state at the time and didn’t have the funds to make a complete highway. They were desperate for a paved road that ran from Miami to Afton, so they decided to build only half a highway.

There is now only a 3-mile section remaining of the original 15 miles on Historic Route 66. Look for the historical marker on E. 140 Road near Miami.

Many parts of the highway are in need of repair or covered in gravel, so drive slowly when visiting.

The highway is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to be a historic and fun tourist attraction in Oklahoma.
