Sinkholes. They’re a terrifying natural anomaly that keeps people chained to the news, worried and frustrated that they just might be next. From the sinkhole that opened below a bedroom in Florida, swallowing people whole, to small ones that burst without anyone quite knowing how that large hole suddenly got in their yard. They’re real and dangerous, openings to caves that burrow deep beneath the ground.  Tennessee hasn’t had a ton of dangerous breakage (thankfully), but there are TWO that’ll rattle you for sure. Take a look!

Think you’re safe? Guess again.

Austin Peay State University, located in Clarksville, got a HUGE surprise in May 2014. A massive sinkhole. Not the kind of surprise you normally look for, hey?

Since the stadium was under construction at the time, no one was actually on the field. That would’ve been a nightmare.

With no injuries (thank heavens!) and a construction crew already on hand, the problem was patched up quickly - filling a sinkhole that grew to more than forty feet deep. Shivers, anyone?

Take a look at this massive sinkhole. We’re just glad it wasn’t a couple feet to the side…that could’ve created a REAL roadblock.

50 feet in Fairview, that’s what this little stinker measured. According to news reports there was hardly a warning, just a sudden rupture in the ground. No injuries, just a scare for the man who watched it all happen.

This is nightmare fodder, isn’t it? Who knows when ol’ Rocky Top is going to get angsty. Have you witnessed one here in our great state? How do you feel about the whole sinkhole phenomenon? Let us know in the comments below!
