Birth and death are two fundamental experiences of life that always leave a mark on those who witness them. When a child is born there is celebration, and when someone dies they are mourned… However, when someone is murdered… mourning is accompanied by even more sadness, confusion, and despair. Fortunately, we do not experience a lot of murders in the Bluegrass, especially compared to other states.
We have had a few horrific homicides over the years, and here are 10 of them:
- December 28, 2003
Kentucky Corrections Betty Jean and 8 year old son, Corey Windsor were stabbed to death by her X-husband, Shawn Windsor.
- August 8, 1985 and June 16, 1985
Murderpedia Tammy Aker (August) of Letcher Country, along with Bessie and Edwin Morris (June ) of Gray Hawk were all stabbed to death by Roger D. Epperson and Benny Hodge during robberies.
- February 14, 2014
Yahoo Kevin, Sarah (parents) and Grace (daughter age 12) Hendrix of Corbin Kentucky were shot and killed by Jason Hendrix, their son and Grace’s brother.
- March 9, 1997
Murderpedia Willa Jean Ferrier, Crystal Conaster, and Chris Boswell were shot and killed by John Roscoe Garland in McCreary Country, supposedly over jealousy.
- April 2014
WKYT Kathy and her daughter Samantha Netherland were killed in Nelson County, but the murder has not yet been solved.
- October 8, 1989 and August 17, 1991
Murderpedia Kimberly Bowersock, Lillian Contino, Jerry McMillen, Calvin Reynolds (October), along with Rodney, and Lynn Vaughn (August) were all shot and killed by Robert Foley in Madison County.
- May 18,1929
Enquirer Cecil Van Hoose, age 7, was shot dead by Carl Newton Mahan, age 6, over a piece of scrap iron in Paintsville.
The loss of a loved one is sad, regardless of circumstances. Homicide just makes it a far more traumatic experience for the victim, their families, and friends. It is with respect to those that mourn that I post their deceased. May the victims never be forgotten, nor their killers, if found.
