Have you ever been talking to someone who’s not from Washington when they just start bombarding you with the same old questions about life in our state? It can get so annoying to answer them over and over again! How many of these stereotypical things have you been asked by people who aren’t from around here?

  1. “You’re from Washington? You mean Washington D.C.?”

Aaron Brown / Flickr No, more like the entire state on the other side of the country. Ironically, our area used to be named “Columbia” after the Columbia River but it was later changed to Washington to avoid confusion with the District of Columbia. Genius move.

  1. “So you’re from Seattle?”

Joe Wolf / Flickr You know there’s more than just one city in the whole state, right?

  1. “Isn’t Washington pretty much Canada?”

Torrey Wiley / Flickr We may both have a city named “Vancouver” but that certainly doesn’t make us any less of a state than anyone else!

  1. “Do you drink a lot of Starbucks?”

ND Strupler / Flickr Depends on who you ask, but most of us prefer the smaller cafes to get our daily caffeine fix - especially these unique coffee shops.

  1. “Is everyone crazy about recycling?”

Tony Alter / Flickr We might care about the environment, but not all of us are going to lose our minds if you toss your bottle in the wrong bin.

  1. “Isn’t weed legal in Washington?”

Angelo Carosio / Flickr Yes, but we aren’t all partaking in it. Besides, it’s legal in a number of other states now too.

  1. “Have you seen Bigfoot?”

Zach Wist / Flickr No… have you?

  1. “Are you a Seahawks fan?”

Wikipedia Most of us have respect for the home team, but to be fair, not everyone’s a fan or is even into sports at all.

  1. “Do you wear socks and sandals?”

Daiga Brakmane / Flickr Definitely not. It may be function over fashion, but chances are you won’t see anybody around here wearing these together.

  1. “Does it rain all the time?”

Ryan Heaney / Flickr This one probably gets asked the most by far, and really, it isn’t all that bad. Head out to Eastern Washington and you’ll need to stock up on sunblock!
