Maine has some pretty creepy ghost stories to its name. From eerie roads haunted with ghost brides to rocky islands with a history of cannibalism, if you’re looking for a scare you’ve come to the right place. It’s no wonder that Stephen King is the product of Maine! If you’re the type that likes finding these scary spots and spine-tingling turns, you’ll want to head to two different cemeteries in Bucksport where not one, but TWO creepy tales are buried in the town’s history.
While a lovely, historic place there’s just something about Bucksport that leaves us feeling…creepy.

And all signs point to two cemeteries sitting in the small town.

The first story coming out of Buck Cemetery is that of the cursed tomb of Colonel Buck.

Legend has it that Colonel Buck had the mother of his illegitimate child burned, during which time her leg detached and fell out of the fire.
Abi Skipp / Flickr After watching the horrible sight, her caring son ran after the leg and saved it from the fire. Before being killed, she reportedly warned Buck that he would wear the mark of the deed forever.
Cut to a few decades later and his tomb bears the unremovable mark of a stocking-clad leg.

But, the real evil deed lurking within a Bucksport cemetery is what happened to Sarah Ware, who went missing after walking alone one night in 1898.

Two weeks later her body was found in a field, decomposing and with her head nearly completely removed.
Jim Grey / Flickr While there were suspects, nothing much came of determining who committed the terrible crime. But, what’s worse might be the story of her burial.
While her body was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, her head was kept as evidence for 100 years after the crime. Ultimately, the head was buried as well, but no one know for sure if the head was every reunited with her body.
For now, there’s a small headstone marking where the body is supposed to exist.

These two cemeteries can easily be seen in a day. Oak Hill Cemetery is located at 34 Middle Street in Bucksport, while Buck Cemetery doesn’t actually have an address, but you’re sure to find it if you head to town.
