Central State Hospital, formally known as the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane was a psychiatric treatment facility located in Indianapolis. Rumor has it this old insane asylum is very much haunted. What do you think?

First, here is a picture of the 1895 Pathology Building on the grounds of Central State Hospital.

The hospital was renamed the “Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane” in 1889.

After 1926, it was known as simply as Central State Hospital.

From the years 1848 to 1948, the hospital grew incredibly.

SHVWNCOOPER It eventually encompassed two massive ornate buildings (one for male and one for female patients); a pathological department; a farm colony for occupational therapy; a “sick” hospital intended for the treatment of physical ailments; a chapel; an amusement hall; a bakery; and so much more.

By the early 1970s, most of the hospital’s Victorian-era style buildings were declared unsound.

I wanted to give a special thanks, again, to some of the incredible photographers I get to work with. These articles would not be possible (and not nearly as incredible) if it were not for the photographers who take these pictures. My email (submit-in@onlyinyourstate.com) is always open if you happen to be a photographer floating around the Hoosier state with pictures you think should be featured in an article. Be sure and let me know what you think about this creepy insane asylum in Indiana in the comments!
