As you can imagine, with little actual medication and knowledge of the white plague, doctors were desperate to find cures. They utilized quite a few experimental and highly questionable treatments. Things like leaving the patients ribcage open and exposed while draining liquid from the lungs.

Some were killed by the disease, others by the treatments, and some by both. All these patients took their trip down the death tunnel. There were a variety of emotions experienced moments before death. Some say angry spirits dwell in the tunnel now.
