With summer on the horizon, residents of the Tar Heel State are starting to plan out what adventures they’ll take before colder weather inevitably sneaks up us on again. While it’s always nice to enjoy weekend getaways and fun staycations around North Carolina, sometimes all we have time for are day trips that will take us to memorable destinations. We’ve already talked about some of our favorite roadside attractions that you’ll want to visit, but there’s one more spot you’ll need to make sure is on your bucket list!

During the 1930s nearly 10 head-turning gas stations were built around the city of Winston-Salem. This is the last of its kind.

A whimsical way of advertising, the colorful gas stations were placed in North Carolina as a fun way to attract customers.

With none of these clamshell-shaped stations still up and running, the empty attraction now serves as a fun photo-op for travelers.

Inside the station that sits unsuspectingly on the corner of East Sprague and Peachtree Street, you’ll find Shell Oil antiques, photos and framed articles about the gas station’s history.

Restored with the help of Preservation North Carolina and Shell Oil back in the 1990s, the gas station will forever be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Giving the historic roadside attraction a much needed facelift, Shell Oil helped out with the restoration by donating two restored gas pumps and a replica lamp post for out front. Bringing the repairs to a grand completion, this spot has become a favorite place for travelers to stop and take photos.
