When you first arrive at Lums Pond State Park, it seems charming enough. The trees are so pretty, and the air is fresh and clean. It’s the perfect spot for a night of autumn camping.

In the 1970s, something terrible happened here. A young girl ran away from home and came to this area to stay overnight. As she was walking along the trail, she happened upon another camper - a man by himself.

The man attacked her and raped her. The girl’s screams for help and pleas to be left alone echoed across the pond - but no one was there to hear her. Finally, the attacker brutally murdered the young girl and left her bruised, battered body on the trail.

The killer was never caught, but the ghost of the distraught runaway still lingers here. Visitors to this area often hear footsteps in the woods around the pond. Some hear a young girl’s voice saying, “no…” and “please…”

If you’re brave enough to camp at Lums Pond, take refuge in your tent when it gets dark. As you tuck in, you’ll hear the wind whistling through the trees. You might hear something (or someone) walk through your camp. And then, just as you drift off to sleep, you might hear a young girl scream.
