There is no denying that Kansas is a gorgeous and peaceful place to live and/or visit… but this one quiet area may just be one of the most oasis-like locations in the entire state! If you are looking to get away from it all and get in touch with nature, it is time to head to this southwest Kansas hot spot.

Located in Clark County, Big Basin Prairie Preserve is a beautiful government-protected area that features nearly 2,000 acres of thousand-year-old sinkholes, rolling hills, canyons, wildflowers, native wildlife, and other unique surprises.

Not only is the area peaceful, it is also extremely historic, having been once occupied by the Northern Cheyenne Indians during the Northern Cheyenne Exodus of 1878. Another Big Basin selling point? The land houses the legendary Jacob’s Well, which is thought to be haunted by the ghosts of those who have lost their lives while trying to find its bottom. (You can read more about the hauntings here.)
