Solomons Island is the quiet and peaceful fishing town to enjoy seaside views and small town charm. Solomons Island is a major boating and fishing center located where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. Less than an hour outside of the district, this fishing town is the perfect place for a weekend getaway from Washington DC.
Solomons Island was originally called Bourne’s Island in 1680, then was later called Somerville’s Island from 1740-1814, then Sandy Island until 1865. The land was owned by a number of individuals until 1865 when a eighty acres called “Sandy Island” was sold to Isaac Solomon.

Following the Civil War, Solomons Island became known as a fishing town and would became a popular spot for ship building, seafood and the oyster industry.

Today, you can visit historic buildings that represent the town’s history, such as the Drum Point Lighthouse which was built in 1883 and is one three remaining lighthouses that were originally located around Chesapeake Bay.

The Drum Point Lighthouse was moved in 1975 to be on the grounds of the Calvert Marine Museum. The museum is an interactive and immersive maritime museum that is wonderful for all ages.

You can experience the creativity of Solomons Island at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, which has a quarter mile walking path through thirty sculptures from various institutions around the country.

The adventurous may want to explore Calvert Cliffs, where you may even find a fossil or two.

But if you prefer to stick to close to the water, Solomons Island will give you plenty to see as you stroll the Riverwalk boardwalk.
