Illinois has some famous rivers. But there is one river you might not know about, one that has some bizarre, and even occasionally deadly tendencies. I’m talking about the Dead River. Now, the Dead River isn’t so named because of pollution. Rather, it is so named because it can appear dead.

The mouth of the Dead River is in the Illinois Beach State Park.

While it appears to be normal, it just stops flowing at one point.

The river simply disappears into the sand in a dead end.

What’s happening under the surface, however, is that pressure builds up, and it violently explodes.

It builds enough pressure to burst sand barricades, so if you are around, you could get seriously injured.

Despite this weird river, the location, the Illinois Beach State Park, is truly beautiful. Read all about it.
