We’ve seen some pretty weird things here in the 802, but what makes these attractions so awesome are the colorful stories behind them. In Vermont you can find a giant gorilla holding up a VW bug, a chapel dedicated to dogs and a floating bridge, but in Bennington you can find a truly unique roadside attraction: the World’s Tallest Ladderback Chair. And you can be sure that it has an intriguing history.

The World’s Tallest Ladderback Chair was originally erected in 1969 by Haynes and Kane furniture store. It replaced a slightly smaller one which had been there since the 1940s.

For many years the people of Bennington enjoyed the “Big Chair.”

The Vermont weather took its toll on the chair and it was taken down in 2000 and soon after the store went out of business. A few years later the LaFlammes bought the store and reopened.

With a lot of hard work and determination, a replica of the 19 foot tall Big Chair was created.

However, just 20 days after the unveiling, the Big Chair tipped over in a storm.

It was repaired, reassembled and remounted in concrete in less than a month.

Everyone was delighted to see the Big Chair standing securely once again.

Sadly, on January 3, 2014, the furniture store burned down.

The family reopened the store at 239 Main Street later that year, but everyone wondered… Would the Big Chair move too?

The chair followed and stands today.
