The unincorporated community of Jarbidge is located north of Elko, not far from the Idaho-Nevada border. While remote, this tiny isolated Nevada village is a former mining town and spectacular wilderness area that provides breathtaking views of pristine panoramas. You will be charmed by the rugged look and feel of this part of the state. Dirt roads and no cell phone coverage make way for friendly locals and a spellbinding history.
The tiny, former mining town of Jarbidge (bottom left) was originally settled in 1909 by prospectors hunting for gold. During its heyday, Jarbidge was home to a few hundred residents. Today, roughly a dozen residents call Jarbidge their permanent home.

The nearby Jarbidge wilderness is a truly jaw-dropping slice of nature to explore. This 65,000-acre region extends into Idaho. Bow hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping are quite popular in this idyllic setting.

Take a stroll down Main Street where you can see Pioneer Park, old miner’s stables, some former brothels, and the recently remodeled Community Center, another original building that now provides a glimpse back into the town’s interesting history.

The residents maintain the Trading Post, Red Dog Saloon, gas pump, Outdoor Inn motel/restaurant/bar, and post office. They also enjoy Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and other similar get-togethers.

While in Jarbidge, be sure to visit the jail. Constructed in 1911, you can step inside a cell complete with a chamber pot cot and chair. You can also read some interesting stories about noted prisoner Ben Kuhl, the last person to rob a stagecoach in the Wild West in December 1916.

There are several phenomenal, world-class fishing spots nearby. Jarbidge is one of the only places to catch the famously prized bull trout. Rainbow trout are also plentiful.

If you choose to visit Jarbidge, be wary during the winter when snowdrifts can make the dirt roads almost impassible from the Nevada side.
