Monson Lake State Park is one of the least-visited state parks in Minnesota, with just 21,000 annual visits. At just 346 acres, it is also among the smallest state parks in our state.

But this little lake has a lot to offer. Visitors are welcome to cast a line from the fishing pier or launch their boat using the boat landing. You can expect to pull walleye, bass, northerns, and sunfish from this lake.

If fishing’s not your thing, there are hiking trails around the lake. With just 1.2 miles of paths, the park trail system should be manageable for most people.

History buffs will want to make a stop at the historic marker near the lake. It honors a family who lost their lives there during the Dakota War of 1862.

The lake and surrounding area are also home to a variety of wildlife. A prime birdwatching spot, keep your eyes peeled for herons, pelicans, egrets, and more.
