W. George Metz, an Illinois native and travel enthusiast, set his sights on building an amazing home in the small town of Quincy in 1900. He was inspired by the architecture he saw on his many trips, and wanted to bring a piece of Europe home to the Midwest. The result was the stunning Villa Kathrine, still a beautiful sight to see today!

Metz sold the home soon after in 1912.
Villa Kathrine The home fell into disrepair. For decades, the once beautiful castle was left largely uncared for as it was passed around from owner to owner.
In the 1970s, a group was formed to save it from being demolished.
Arts Quincy/Facebook Friends of the Castle, still operating today, spent two decades restoring the place - from 1978 to 1998. Additional interior and furnishing improvements have been made since then.
Today, Villa Kathrine serves as the town’s tourist information center.
Villa Kathrine It is also available for group tours and private events. The villa is a favorite among engaged couples in the area!
The Moroccan-style design lives on for locals to enjoy.
