Iowa is a diverse state, geologically speaking. Some people aren’t aware that a shallow sea covered Iowa some 300 million years ago. Or that today, you can walk in the path of the glaciers that came and forever left their imprint on the state of Iowa.
Millions of years ago when the area was covered by a sea, glaciers moved right into the body of water.

When the glaciers advanced into the prehistoric sea, they tore away the sandstone as they moved, leaving huge gulches in their path.

Today that sea is gone but at Ledges State Park in Madrid, you can actually walk in the paths of those glaciers and see the giant 50-foot sandstone walls and the 100-foot bluffs they left behind.

On the many trails in the park you can climb to the top and get a bird’s eye view of this amazing piece of Iowa history.
