As the human population grows, and our world becomes increasingly smaller through the powers of the internet, it is hard to point to any place as truly remote anymore. Everything is accessible and known. That said, there are still places that are pretty remote, especially in Wisconsin. One such place is Washington Island. The population is about 600. But even on this island, only accessibly by ferry, there are spots that will make you feel like you are truly in another world.
Located at the top of Door County, Washington Island is called “Death’s Door,” referring to the choppy waters up here that resulted in many sailors perishing.

That doesn’t stop people from going out in kayaks, because the views from the water offer some amazing shots of the island.

But most of us prefer to stay on the beach. And whoa, can you get a great view here. The water is so clear, and the rocks are so smooth.

Seriously, there are parts of the island where you might not run into another soul as you explore it.

There are some pretty forests to explore here, too. Much of it is undeveloped, so make sure you have a good idea of where you are going.

One of the coolest and most unexpected features of this island is the Medieval-style church built on it, called a stavkirke. It is truly breathtaking.

Finally, there might not be a better place to take in a sunset. You simply won’t be able to believe how gorgeous it is.
