We all know that iconic scene from the movies. The hero dashes out on to an old swinging bridge as ropes begin to fray or boards begin to break… Indiana Jones fans will know exactly what I am talking about! If you are an adrenaline junkie and love this kind of a thrill, then this scenic hike in Yosemite National Park over a real life swinging bridge is the adventure for you!

Deep in the forests of Yosemite National Park, there is a scary swinging bridge that isn’t all that high or long, but is all that stands between you and the river’s strong current below.

There are two Swinging Bridges in Yosemite. The more famous one is pictured here and actually doesn’t swing. It’s a more highly trafficked bridge down in Yosemite Valley.

The real Swinging Bridge, also known as the Wawona Swinging Bridge to differentiate it, will actually swing with your weight as you make your way across it. It’s short and sweet, but will allow you to know what an old fashioned footbridge actually feels like.

The Wawona in its name comes from the fact that it is located near the old Wawona Hotel, one of the historic lodges in the National Park.

The trail to this bridge is pretty accessible. It’s only about 1.5 miles round trip and is pretty flat and even. The path eventually will connect you with Wawona Hotel.

Yosemite is known for its stunning creeks and waterfalls, but this stretch of the river near the bridge is particularly peaceful.

During the spring, the water rushes fast and cold, but in the summer and early fall this section of the river is a favorite for those looking to take a quick dip. There is also a granite slide into a swimming hole just up the river a ways. It might tear up your swim suit, but it’s well worth it!

It’s a great place to view wildflowers in the spring and early summer, and while you still see plenty of people, it’s a great place to get off the beaten path and away from some of the larger crowds.

This short trail is also a very popular spot for picnics. There are large boulders typical of the high Sierra where you can relax and take a load off as well as plenty of shade.
